The United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit dismissed a petition for a writ of mandamus because the underlying habeas corpus petition had already been resolved. The court found the case moot since the petitioner received the relief he sought from the District Court.
Eddy Alexandre filed a petition for a writ of mandamus seeking an order directing the District Court to rule on his habeas petition. While the petition was pending, the District Court ruled on the habeas petition by dismissing it on February the second, two thousand and twenty-six.
The court’s reasoning
The court determined that because Alexandre had received all the relief he requested from the District Court, his petition was moot. The court cited Blanciak versus Allegheny Ludlum Corporation to support the dismissal on mootness grounds.
What it means going forward
The dismissal prevents the appellate court from issuing a precedent-setting ruling on the merits of the habeas petition, as the issue was resolved by the lower court.
